The need
The cost of distant water is not measured in litres. It is measured in the hours a girl spends walking instead of sitting in a classroom.
Where the nearest source is two kilometres away, school attendance falls and waterborne illness rises. Both reverse quickly when the source moves closer.
Why maintenance is the whole job
A broken handpump is worse than no handpump: the village has stopped maintaining the old route and the walk is now longer than before.
So every installation comes with a trained local caretaker and a spare-parts fund. We would rather build fewer and keep them running.
