Emergency Relief

When the water rises, the first seventy-two hours decide the next six months

The need

India's disasters are seasonal and predictable in kind, if not in place. The monsoon will flood somewhere; a cyclone will make landfall.

What is not inevitable is the aftermath. A household that receives food, water and shelter in the first week usually recovers. One that does not often sells land, or sends a child to work.

What we do

We pre-position stock before the season rather than raising funds after the photographs. That is the whole difference between relief and a response.

Kits carry food, drinking water, a tarpaulin, basic medicine and hygiene supplies — enough for a household of five for two weeks.

Giving with amanah

Your donation is an amanah — a trust held on your behalf, and on behalf of the household that receives it. We treat it as money that is not ours, because it is not.

That means buying at market rates and keeping the quotes, signing every handover against a register, and publishing accounts that an auditor has seen before you have.

Our promise to you

We will tell you what your donation funded, including when it did not go to plan. We will not publish a figure we cannot evidence — you will find outstanding markers on this site rather than estimates.

And we will never use a photograph of someone in distress to raise money from you.

Questions

Before you give

Funds go to pre-positioning stock and maintaining response capacity, which is what makes a seventy-two-hour response possible at all.

Not automatically. Emergency relief reaches households regardless of eligibility, so we fund it from sadaqah and general donations. If you wish to give Zakat, please choose a Zakat-eligible appeal.
