Medical Aid

Most medical poverty in India is one bill away

The need

A single hospital admission is one of the most common routes into long-term debt in rural India. Families sell land, or borrow at rates they cannot service.

We settle the bill with the hospital directly, which keeps the household out of debt and removes any question about where the money went.

Costs vary by case and hospital. We publish each case's actual cost rather than an average, so no unit price is quoted here.

Giving with amanah

Your donation is an amanah — a trust held on your behalf, and on behalf of the household that receives it. We treat it as money that is not ours, because it is not.

That means buying at market rates and keeping the quotes, signing every handover against a register, and publishing accounts that an auditor has seen before you have.

Our promise to you

We will tell you what your donation funded, including when it did not go to plan. We will not publish a figure we cannot evidence — you will find outstanding markers on this site rather than estimates.

And we will never use a photograph of someone in distress to raise money from you.

Questions

Before you give

Because there isn't one. A dialysis cycle, a cataract operation and a cardiac procedure are not comparable, and averaging them would tell you nothing true.

Yes, where the patient's household meets the criteria.
