The link between a handpump and a girl's attendance record
Water collection is unpaid work, and it is disproportionately done by girls.
Where the nearest water source is two kilometres away, someone walks it several times a day. In most of the villages we work in, that someone is a girl of school age.
Moving the source closer does not just reduce illness. It returns hours to a household, and those hours show up in attendance records.
This is why we treat water as an education programme as much as a health one.
