How 80G tax relief actually works for donors

What you can claim, what you need to keep, and why your PAN matters on the receipt.

Section 80G of the Income Tax Act allows a deduction for donations to approved institutions. The deduction is from your taxable income, not from your tax bill — a distinction that trips up a lot of first-time donors.

The receipt must carry the organisation's PAN and its 80G registration number. Without both, the deduction can be disallowed.

Your own PAN goes on the receipt too, which is why our donation form asks for it when you tick the 80G option. If you do not want a receipt, we do not ask.

Keep the receipt. The organisation also files the donation against your PAN, and the two need to agree.
