Zakat

An obligation, not a donation. We treat it accordingly — held separately, distributed only to eligible recipients, and accounted for on its own.

What Zakat is

Zakat is 2.5% of qualifying wealth held for a lunar year, payable by every Muslim whose net wealth exceeds the nisab. It is one of the five pillars, and it is an obligation rather than a gift.

That distinction matters for how an organisation handles it. Zakat has eight defined categories of recipient. An organisation that pools it with unrestricted income cannot honestly tell you it reached one of them.

How we handle it

Zakat received through this site is held in a separate account and distributed only to recipients who meet the criteria. It is reported separately in our accounts, so you can see what came in and where it went.

Where it goes

Zakat-eligible appeals

A woman in a green saree receives a ration kit of rice, dal and oil in a village courtyard.

Ration Kits

Rice, dal, atta, oil and spices — a month of meals for a household that has run out of options.

A boy in school uniform holds a notebook, standing in a classroom.

Orphan Sponsorship

Monthly support for one child — school fees, uniform, books and a health check — paid to the family, not an institution.

A doctor checks an elderly man's blood pressure at a mobile health camp.

Medical Aid

Mobile health camps, treatment costs, dialysis and surgeries — settled directly with the hospital.

What is zakatable

Six kinds of wealth Zakat applies to

If you hold any of these above the nisab for a full lunar year, Zakat is due on them.

Cash

Money in hand, in your bank accounts, and in fixed deposits.

Gold and silver

Jewellery and bullion, valued at today's rate per gram — not what you paid for it.

Shares and investments

Holdings bought for growth or profit, including mutual funds.

Money owed to you

Receivables you reasonably expect to recover.

Business assets

Trade stock at resale value, and profits, after deducting liabilities.

Property

Investment property held for resale, and saved rental income — not the home you live in.

Questions

Zakat questions we are asked most

Every adult Muslim of sound mind whose net wealth has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year.

Add your zakatable assets, subtract debts due now, and pay 2.5% of what remains — provided the total is above the nisab. Our calculator does this in rupees.

Eight categories are named in Surah at-Tawbah (9:60). We explain which we use, and why, on where your Zakat goes.

No. Although the third category would arguably permit it, we fund operations from the Impact Fund and general donations instead. 100% of Zakat goes to eligible recipients.

Schools differ genuinely on jewellery in regular personal use. The Hanafi position includes it; others exempt it. Our calculator includes it by default — adjust the figure if you follow a different position.

No. Zakat al-Fitr is a separate, smaller obligation paid per household member before the Eid prayer. See Zakat al-Fitr.
